چکیده

Mantle seismic structure beneath the United States spanning from the active western plate margin to the passive eastern margin was imaged with teleseismic P and S wave traveltime tomography including USArray data up to May 2014. To mitigate artifacts from crustal structure 5–40 s, Rayleigh wave phase velocities were used to create a 3-D starting model. Major features of the final P and Smodels include two distinct low-velocity anomalies at depths of ~60–300 km beneath the central and northern Appalachians and passive margin. The central Appalachian low-velocity anomaly coincides with Eocene basaltic magmatism, and the northern anomaly is located along the Cretaceous track of the Great Meteor hot spot. At depths of ~300–700 km beneath the central and eastern U.S. large high-velocity anomalies are inferred to be remnants of the Farallon slab that subducted prior to ~40Ma during the Laramide orogeny.

Structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the western United States revealed by ambient noise and earthquake tomography

[1] Ambient noise tomography and multiple plane wave earthquake tomography are new methods of surface wave analysis that yield much more highly refined information about the crust and uppermost mantle than traditional surface wave techniques. Applied together to data observed at more than 300 broadband seismic stations from the Transportable Array component of the EarthScope USArray, these meth...

2-D Surface Wave Tomography in the Northwest Part of the Iranian Plateau

In this study, we obtained two-dimensional tomography maps of the Rayleigh wave group velocity for the northwest part of the Iranian Plateau in order to investigate the structure of the crust and the uppermost mantle of NW Iran. To do this, the local earthquake data during the period 2006-2013, recorded by the 10 broadband stations of the Iranian seismic network (INSN) were used. After the prel...

Geoelectrical Structure of the Lithosphere and Asthenosphere beneath the Northwestern United States

We have inverted magneto telluric (MT) data collected in nine states of the northwestern United States as a part of the EarthScope project for 3D imaging of electrical resistivity to a depth of 500 km using recent advances in extremely largescale electromagnetic modeling and inversion. The results of our mega-cell 3D inversion reveal multi-scale geo electrical in homogeneities in the upper mant...

Mantle structure beneath the western United States and its implications for convection processes

[1] We present tomographic images of the mantle structure beneath the western United States. Our Dynamic North America Models of P and S velocity structure (DNA07‐P and DNA07‐S) use teleseismic body waves recorded at ∼600 seismic stations provided by the Earthscope Transportable Array and regional networks. DNA07‐P and ‐S benefit from the unprecedented aperture of the network while maintaining ...

Mantle seismic structure beneath the MELT region of the east pacific rise from P and S wave tomography

Relative travel time delays of teleseismic P and S waves, recorded during the Mantle Electromagnetic and Tomography (MELT) Experiment, have been inverted tomographically for upper-mantle structure beneath the southern East Pacific Rise. A broad zone of low seismic velocities extends beneath the rise to depths of about 200 kilometers and is centered to the west of the spreading center. The magni...
